"People often ask me, 'Why did you decide to become a designer?' That's just it. I didn't decide to become a designer...I just am one. Since childhood, I have created house plans and built things with my hands. It's in my DNA. My father was an artist-mechanic-welder-tool maker. He could make or build just about anything. It comes natural to me to be creative and to solve problems. Isn't that what decorating is about...solving problems?
The fact is, I love to create beautiful spaces! I get excited over small things...a new rug or lamp, a fun tile pattern or the way a piece of wood feels when you slide your hand across its grain. I love texture and juxtaposition, and enjoy mixing objects together regardless of whether or not they are from a high-end store or Goodwill. My own home is full of things we've collected over the years. There's a story behind each object, a memory of where it came from or the person who gave it to us. Sometimes I can visualize where I was when I found it and how I felt when I brought it home.
This is how I like to approach my projects. I like to decorate and design my clients' homes with the things that have meaning to them! It could be a piece of art they found while on vacation in Europe or a finger painting drawn by their 5-year old daughter. It doesn't matter to me if the object is precious or just precious to them! Sometimes the value of a piece of furniture or a set of china is more about the feelings and emotions that it brings to their heart than its monetary value.
My philosophy behind building and designing a house or space is equal parts science and art. I believe both are necessary. You have to use science when you build a structure so that it will be sound and plumb. But you have to use the art of design to bring it to life or else it's just a structure. I've heard it said that a house isn't a home until the people move in. It's the people and their story within that brings life to the structure, making it a home!"
